Bob Beecher was a member of the Mountain Computer Society but he was also much more... he was a dear friend whose friendship I will cherish. Bob would go out of his way to make life easier for anyone. He loved collecting computer's of all makes though my belief is that he loved his Commodore 8-bit machines the most. Bob had a massive display of working computers in his home, the entire wall of his dining room, (or was that one of his many computer room's?), was set up with computer's of various manufacture ALL in working order. An entire wall in his living room was devoted to magazines and books, not to mention floppy disks and other software packages, and also a working model of a Commodore PET. I remember visiting Bob one cold and dreary winter day for the sole purpose of setting up a null-modem to transfer many files he had downloaded from AOL to his 486PC to their respective computer's, and also to transfer close to 3 megs of Commodore related graphics to 1581 disks for my C128. Though Bob was not feeling well he decided that he could help me in my quest for those graphics. Bob was also concerned about one of his neighbors's children who had a C64 but no modem to connect to the, at the time, various Commodore related BBS's here in the Salt Lake Valley. Bob was on a quest to find, at a minimum, a Commodore 1670 modem to give to this child. I wish I had known of Bob's search prior to my vist so that I could have brought the 1670 I have to Bob. With Bob's deteriorating health it became more difficult to find time when Bob could accept visitors and to this day I wish I had gotten the name of the child that Bob was trying to find that modem for. I still have that Commodore 1670 modem. :( Sadly, Bob passed away on July 1, 1995. Always wanting to hear only good news it was my belief that Bob was moved into a nursing home, either here in the Salt Lake Valley, or in California, where Bob had mentioned he had a daughter. |
